Sheri's Pro Advice on Travel Insurance
Hey folks Ra was asking me about travel insurance
Y'all know I love insurance. I prefer Fast Cover. They're cheap and budget friendly, and they're really helpful if you have to make a claim, and if you call them while you're still in Africa to let them know something has gone wrong, they'll usually process your insurance claim with minimal questions
These are the guys that gave me $5000 back on that trip I did with Peter where we had a strike, an airport set on fire, a minor cyclone and engine failure on the plane. They were amazing
I always recommend to pay the extra $50-$100 to reduce your excess to $0. Little things always go wrong, and if you have $0 excess, you have no reason not to make a claim
I generally get either the fast cover comprehensive or standard, depending on what I'm after. They actually also cover rental car excess - so have a read of the fine print but if you're getting Fast cover insurance, you may not need to also get insurance through the car rental agency
And if you're flying via Singapore, I ABSOLUTELY recommend you get comprehensive as it accounts for delayed baggage. It happened to Jaz and I for AB23 where one of our planes via Singapore was delayed, meaning our luggage was delayed 24 hours. With comprehensive, if your plane is more than 6 hours delayed, you get a stipend for food and accom, and if your luggage is delayed more than 24 hours you actually get around $400 each to go spend on clothes and toiletries for your 24 hours. It's pretty great!
FastCover is also really good with stolen items. Both standard and comprehensive cover you for stolen items. You remember how many people got phones stolen in decompression.
I've gone through a lot of travel insurance companies and this is my favourite. For one month in south Africa, it's around AU$300 pp for comprehensive cover and a lil extra to reduce the excess. If anything goes wrong, you'll make that money back with an insurance claim. I've never claimed less money than I paid on any FastCover trip I've done 😉
I've been in 2x category 5 (high destruction) cyclones, half a dozen smaller cyclones, a few earthquakes, more delayed/cancelled flights than on-time ones, an an airport blockade getting set on fire, a few protests, and an engine failure on an aircraft (while on the runway, thankfully!).
