The capital of Samoa is beautiful and sleepy, but it should not be the focal point of your trip. It is safe to walk around Apia and you can get around quite easily on foot, although taxis are quite cheap.
After travelling to several Pacific Island Nations, I still refer to the Palolo Deep Marine Reserve as my favourite snorkelling spot in the Pacific. And the best part – it’s only a 20-minute walk from the Samoa Cultural Village. Alternatively, a taxi will take 5 minutes and cost around 15 Tala.
It will cost 5 Tala to enter Palolo Deep Marine Reserve, and you can rent snorkels and flippers for 10 Tala if you didn’t bring your own.
Whilst in Apia, you cannot miss the I'mmaculate Conception Cathedral. A short walk away from the city centre, you're likely to pass by here when exploring the city on foot. Head inside and marvel at the beauty of Samoa's largest cathedral. Although it was damaged in the 2009 earthquake, today you cannot tell that any blemishes have ever befallen this beautiful building.
Fugalei Fresh Produce Market
Fugalei Fresh Produce Market is the best place to go for your fruit, vegetables, local snacks, coconut oil, medicines, as well as local artisan handicrafts. It has less tourist stalls than the flea market and great prices.
Whilst at the market, we recommend you buy a cold Niu (pronounced nyu as one syllable), which is a drinking coconut, as well as find yourself some local coconut oil to bring home (good for hair, body, and cooking).
If Fugalei Fresh Produce Market doesn't have what you're looking for, you can also go to the Flea Market! This is a bit more tourist-oriented and you'll find less locals shopping here. If you go towards the end of the day, prices may be lower as vendors are looking to close the day with a few last good sales.
